There is an error in the instructions to Form N-400 under the heading "Processing Information."
It currently reads:
"If on the date of your examination you are more than 50 years of age and have been a lawful permanent resident for 20 years or more, or you are 55 years of age and have been a lawful permanent resident for at least 15 years, you will be exempt from the English language requirement of the law."
It should read:
"If on the date of filing of your application for naturalization you are over 50 years of age and you have been a lawful permanent resident for periods totaling 20 years or more; or you are over 55 years of age and have been a lawful permanent resident for periods totaling 15 years or more, you will be exempt from the English language requirement of the law."
